www.hifi-filter.comLE CIRCUIT DE REFROIDISSEMENTTHE COOLING SYSTEMDAS K%u00dcHLSYSTEMFRENDEDIV 1403-001327ENTHE COOLING SYSTEM AND ITS MAINTENANCE A fully loaded heavy-duty engine generate such a heat that it could heat a seven rooms house.This very important volume of heat must be dissipated to keep the engine operating in an optimum condition. Up to 40% of all engine repaire costs are cooling system related. So to reduce the operating cost and engine downtime, a proper cooling system maintenance is the key of success.Coolant :Most commonly called %u00ab antifreeze %u00bb is used to transport and dissipate the heat generated inside the engine. A quality coolant is made of 50% of demineralized water, 50% of propylene or ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and of additives called SCAs Supplemental Coolant Additives.%u2022 Antifreeze : there are 2 types of antifreeze : Ethylene Glycol (EG) and Propylene Glycol (PG). They both have the property of depressing the freezing point and elevating the boiling point. The antifreeze also transport and dissipate the heat and protects as well against corrosion.%u2022 SCAs : once mixed with the coolant, the SCAs will build up a fine coat on all surfaces in its contact and protect them against cylinder liner and water pump blade pitting due to cavitation. The SCAs will as well protect against corrosion, scale, acidity and foam formation. The DCA4 (Diesel coolant Additif) offers all necessary additives to protect a diesel engine. Warning, DCA4 does not contain antifreeze agent. The effect of DCA4 depletes as the engine runs, it is then necessary to replenish it at every oil change. There are two ways to do this : More and more engine are now equipped with a water (coolant) filter from factory. This filter does not only contain a filtering media that will mechanically stop all solid impurities contained in the system, but it also contains pellets of DCA4 that will progressively dissolve itself and maintain the additives to an optimum level. The concentration of DCA4 varies from one filter to the other, it is then recommended to use a filter with the right amount of DCA4 required by the engine manufacturer or by following the chart below. Replacing the water filter at every oil change interval will guarantee a right amount of SCAs in the coolant. If the engine is not equiped with a water filter, a liquid version of DCA4 is available in various container sizes. The DCA4 is calculated in units.%u2022 Water : it should be of good quality and have a low levels of chlorides (40 ppm), sulplides (100 ppm), low hardness and good pH level (8.5-10).How to get and keep a good quality coolant and cooling system at all time%u2022 Start clean : Drain the system completely and clean it up with a blend of clean water and Restore Plus (follow Restore Plus usage instruction) and then flush heavily with fresh water.%u2022 Filling the system up : We have here the choice of filling the system up with a home-made coolant mix (50% water, 50% glycol and the right amount of DCA4) or to use Compleat a factory coolant already premixed.%u2022 Install a new filter : After cleaning and filling up the cooling system, it is compulsory to replace the old water filter with a new one.%u2022 Maintenance : Replace the water filter at every oil change or add the right amount of liquid DCA4. Use the coolant test strips to check the percentage of glycol and concentration of DCA4 in the cooling system. If concentration is above 0.8 units/litre do not add DCA4 nor replace water filter, wait till next oil change and check again.
